Crane Mats with a Composite Mat Cover Create a Safe, Efficient Stream Crossing for Indianapolis Power and Light
For this Indianapolis Power and Light project, a small stream turns into a huge headache for contractors after a rainstorm.
To create the air bridge, 16- and 30-foot crane mats were installed crossways over the stream bed. Composite mats were then installed as a bridge deck and were used to create on/off ramps for the bridge.
Once pinned together, the composite mats create a continuous, safe surface that does not hop, skip or slide while equipment is being driven over it. These mats are engineer rated and distribute the vehicle weight over entire bridge system – preventing “point failures” on individual bridge timbers.
This is a good example of the effective use of crane mats with a composite mat cover, to quickly build a safe and efficient air bridge over a stream bed.
