Does my geosynthetic liner need to be relined or repaired?
Geosynthetic liner is designed to last for many years, but damage can occur causing leaks in the system. To determine whether your operation needs a reline or a repair, first identify the cause of the damage, then the scope of the problem. It’s also important to determine the short- and long-term requirements for the containment system.
Possible causes of damage to liner:
- UV degradation
- Animals
- Fire
- Chemicals in the water
- Equipment tears during water transfer
- Thermal expansion and contraction
Pre-on-site inspection questions:
Our experienced inspection team uses a series of questions to help recommend whether you should reline your containment system or have it repaired, including:
- What is the age of the liner and composition of the liner system?
- What are the layers and materials used? If a repair is recommended, the technician will need to use materials that work with your existing liner.
- What is the size of the damage i.e. is it isolated or throughout the containment?
- Do you have a leak and if yes, do you know where it is?
- Where is the water coming from and where is it going?
- How much water is currently in the pond?
- What is the composition of the substrate? Note: if the site is rocky and uneven, the inspector may recommend a cushion layer to help protect the bottom of the pond.
- How long will the containment be in service? Note: if the operation is near completion, the operator may request a repair to get them through, as a reline would not be cost effective.
- What is the composition of the material being stored in the containment?
- Are bio solids on the liner? If yes, the system cannot be repaired by placing a new liner on top of the old liner. The old liner would need to be removed.

Once the inspector has a good understanding of the liner condition and the requirements of the operation, an on-site inspection will be performed. This is the best way to determine the optimal plan to remedy the problem and to bring the pond back into service.
