Environmental Containment Systems for Brine Ponds
The impermeable nature of salt rock makes salt dome caverns an ideal, leak-proof way to store large quantities of natural gas safely. The briny water is removed from the caverns to make room for the gas and held in large brine ponds for future use. The water is later reused to pressurize the caverns and retrieve the stored gas.
Brine ponds are also used for desalination, salt harvesting from seawater, condensing minerals from brine, and to store and manage produced water from fracking and oil processing.
Regardless of the use, properly lining brine water storage ponds is critical due to the corrosive nature of brine, as well as potential damage from salt crystals. The need to mitigate the potential for leaks that would contaminate the soil and groundwater is paramount. Material must be durable, chemically resistant, UV resistant to handle exposure and weathering and must be resistant to high compressive stress and sediment in the brine water. Local weather conditions, including rainfall, extreme high and low temperatures are also factors to consider. Geosynthetic materials like HDPE geomembranes are used to prevent leaks and ensure the integrity of the brine.
Highly skilled Mustang Extreme liner technicians, welders and pipe crews are trained in the detailed technical skills required to complete installations properly. Our QAQC team conducts site inspections throughout the installation process to review daily trial weld testing data and to inspect the integrity of welded seams.
