EXPERIENCE BUILT BY THE BILLIONS

Work Anywhere with Safe, Stable Composite Construction Mats

Engineered for superior performance in the most extreme and challenging ground conditions, composite mats are a safe, stable alternative to traditional wood mats.

With a rental fleet of more than 30,000 mats and our experienced crew, we can help keep your projects on schedule and on budget with turnkey delivery, installation, and removal services.

Key Benefits:

  • Superior weight-bearing capacity
  • Interlocking flange design creates a safe, contiguous surface that prevents hopping and shifting under heavy, wheeled equipment
  • Strong cross-ribbed interior distributes weight across the entire panel
  • Designed to perform in all ground conditions, including extremely swampy, muddy, and sandy conditions
  • Resistant to absorption of contaminants
  • Easy to clean, which helps mitigate cross-contamination between job sites
  • Flammability resistant – will not spark in extremely dry conditions
  • Half the weight of wood mats means a significant reduction in freight costs
  • Flammability resistance UL-94 HB rating – will not spark in extremely dry conditions

Composite Mat Applications

temporary roadway

Temporary Roadways

Create easy access to your work sites with portable, temporary roadways that safely support heavy equipment over wet, soggy, or challenging ground conditions.

work platform

Work Platforms

Composite mats interlock, to create stable, temporary work surfaces that prevent dangerous shifting, helping protect expensive equipment from damage or getting stuck in challenging environments.

Systems 7 composite mat staging area

Staging Areas

Composite construction mats provide crews with a clean, dry, anti-slip surface to safely store construction materials and heavy equipment.

geosynthetic liner cover

Liner Cover

Protect geosynthetic liners from rips, tears, and other damage caused by crews and equipment by building a composite pad platform on top of the liner.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do composite mats compare to other matting options for building temporary roads?
Composite mats offer many advantages over traditional wood mats:
    • Designed for durability, they will not rot, decay or fall apart and will not need to be replaced during the course of a job, eliminating man hours and disposal costs.
    • Consistent performance from job to job.
    • Much lighter than wood mats, it is possible to get 40% more linear feet of mats on a truck, reducing freight costs and site congestion.
    • Composite mats do not absorb liquids and can be easily cleaned, making them ideal for environmentally sensitive areas.
    • They are non-conductive, making them resistant to sparks in dry conditions.
    • The interlocking design creates a safer, more stable work surface no matter the ground conditions.
  • How do composite mats perform in extremely wet, muddy, swampy or sandy conditions?
    • Constructed of HDPE plastic, composite mats are semi-buoyant, do not absorb water and have an aggressive tread pattern to provide more traction and less slippage in wet conditions.
    • The interlocking flange design locks mats together to provide more stability and to reduce risks from mats shifting, sinking and sliding in muddy, swampy conditions. This also mitigates “hopping” when vehicular equipment is driven over the mats.
    • Unlike wood, they do not absorb liquids, so they are ideal for standing water.
    • Composite mats are designed to distribute heavy loads from mat to mat, preventing heavy equipment from digging into extremely soft and sandy soil.
  • How much weight can composite mats handle?
Composite mats have a 600 psi load rating. While load capacity varies based on subgrade conditions and equipment weight, composite mats are typically used to support cranes, bulldozers, concrete trucks, dump trucks and other heavy rubber-tracked equipment.
  • Are there cost benefits to composite mats versus wood mats?
Composite mat rentals reduce costs by lowering transportation, labor, and replacement expenses.
    • Twice as many composite mats per truckload means significant savings in freight costs.
    • Composite mats are extremely durable and do not rot, splinter or degrade on the job site so replacement and disposal are not needed.
  • Are there environmental or site compliance advantages to renting composite mats?
Composite mat rentals offer environmental and site compliance advantages compared to traditional wood mats. Composite mats are non-absorbent, preventing cross-contamination and they help protect sensitive terrain. Their durability and reusability also support reduced waste and lower environmental impact.
  • What services does Mustang Extreme provide?
